How Pattern Repeat Eats Rolls (With Real Numbers)

Wallpaper orders go wrong in one specific place: the gap between "wall height" and "drop length." That gap is the pattern repeat — and it ranges from zero to one-quarter of your order. Here is the arithmetic, priced.

The drop-length equation

Drop length = wall height + repeat allowance + top/bottom trim

Every drop must start at a pattern-alignment point. The allowance is whatever remains of the last repeat — up to one full repeat, paid on every drop. Trim adds ~2–4 inches for clean edges at ceiling and baseboard.

The counterintuitive result: on single-roll heights, most patterns yield exactly one drop per roll, and the repeat is paid in leftover rather than in rolls — until wall heights grow. At 9-foot walls with a 27-inch drop-matching repeat, drop length nears 12 feet and rolls yield one drop each with almost no slack: that is where repeats inflate orders by 20–30%.

  1. Alternate-cut for drop matches: cut drops from two rolls in alternation — the half-repeat offset means roll A's offcut is roll B's allowance, reclaiming most of the waste.
  2. Bank offcuts deliberately: doors, windows, and closet interiors consume offcuts; a planned cut list uses them instead of fresh drops.
  3. Choose random or low-repeat patterns for tall rooms: the repeat charge scales with height — vaulted ceilings on a 27-inch drop-match are the most expensive paper in the store, per hung square foot.
