Why the repeat charges you
Every drop must begin at a pattern-alignment point — otherwise the seams clash. So each cut sacrifices the partial repeat at the roll's working end, and every drop is effectively wall height + up to one full repeat of paper. On an 8 ft wall with a 12-inch straight-match repeat: 8 ft + 1 ft repeat + trim = ~9.2 ft per drop, so a 13.5 ft roll yields 1 full drop with a big offcut — repeat waste ~20%.
Straight vs drop match
Straight match: pattern aligns at the same height across every strip — every drop consumes the same repeat allowance. Drop (half) match: alternate strips shift by half a repeat — same per-drop allowance, but alternating drops need cutting from alternating positions (pros cut two rolls alternately to save material). Random/no match: repeat allowance is zero — the cheapest pattern to hang.

- Alternate-roll cutting for drop matches — pairs of rolls share their offcuts.
- Height zones: cutting all drops first, then trimming bottoms at install, beats trimming in the roll.
